This was shot as part of a series for a beauty fitness editorial in Italy, so first of all I needed a model with an athletic physique, but it was equally important to find a suitable location, so that it didn’t completely dominate the subject i.e the model, but instead helped to create the desired feel for the whole set of images.

These huge rocks from a mine were perfect for their strong simple look and clean neutral colours, plus they also acted as wonderful natural reflectors for the subject. N.B in situations like this with lots of light bouncing around it’s essential to use a good lenshood to avoid flare and a good handheld incident lightmeter is very useful for avoiding errors in exposure tha could ruin everything.

When you look through your collection of images next time I bet you will find images where you liked the shot but it was let down by the location. There is no magic wand solution here and you just need to ensure that finding the right location is high on your list of priorities when planning your images.
